Debauchery or contemplation or both await us tonight as we prepare to “try again.” Every year we seek to do better. All of us across the entire world on this night. There is true kinship in that. Even as we feel we have enemies, may part of our attempts to do better include knowing that we are one humanity and our hearts beat simultaneously in a universal desire for at least this one night of the year. It is possible for us to see ourselves in another. It is possible for us to carry this knowledge forward beyond this night. It is possible to allow the light of compassion to befall our faces as we look into each other’s eyes. We do not have to change back into mere pumpkins after the stroke of midnight. We can retain the magic.
