I awoke out of my slumber while dreaming of a captive snake: having to reign her in, after she broke through her tank and ate other animals; a voracious need to be let loose, biting at me as I grabbed at her any which way I could manage, as she burrowed under doorways and into the floor.

*

There was heightened anxiety. Where would she go? She will get lost! She will cause alarm! Who knows what will happen while she is out on her own doing anything she pleases! It was up to me to handle. The snake is in my charge. This is my responsibility! And yet, I knew I would receive violence from the snake. I knew I would get bitten. But this part of the dream is not what scared me at all. I grabbed her lithe body and pulled her out of the floor.

*

Why did I never consider that I was hurting the snake?

*

I awoke and said aloud, eyes still closed, “Do I feel trapped, then? …Yes, I suppose I do.” And fell quite immediately back into sleep, peacefully from there on out.
